A Summer in the Psalms

Orientation, Disorientation, & Reorientation

You are invited to spend the summer in the Psalms at Third Church!

Our summer sermon series will be inspired by the late biblical scholar Dr. Walter Brueggemann, who offered a helpful way of understanding the Psalms through three  broad seasons of human experience: orientation, disorientation, and reorientation.

Psalms of orientation speak to seasons when life feels ordered and steady — when we can recognize God’s goodness, delight in creation, and give thanks for the gifts of life.

Psalms of disorientation give voice to seasons of suffering, confusion, anger, grief, and chaos — those times when life does not make sense, when faith feels strained, and when our prayers may sound more like lament than praise.

And psalms of reorientation bear witness to the surprising grace of God — those moments when, after loss or struggle, we find ourselves met by mercy, renewed in hope, and awakened to gratitude we could not have manufactured on our own.
